Houston, August 2017. Hurricane Harvey turned streets into rivers. Homes into islands. People screamed for help from rooftops. Emergency lines? Dead. Rescue boats? Nowhere near enough. People were dying. Not because help didn't exist, but because help couldn't find them. Matthew Marchetti spent that day pulling neighbors from floodwaters in his small boat. He wasn't a hero. He was just a data engineer who happened to own a boat. By evening, soaked and exhausted, he faced a brutal truth: his boat was too small. The victims were too many. But as he sat in his living room, water still dripping from his clothes, Matthew had a realization that would change everything. The chaos wasn't the storm. It was the information gap. Volunteers with boats were everywhere, not knowing where to go. Victims were trapped, not knowing if anyone was coming. Matthew opened his laptop. He built something beautifully simple: a website where victims dropped rescue pins and volunteers claimed them. That's it. No bureaucracy. No phone trees. Just human beings finding other human beings who needed help. He launched it that night. By the time he fell asleep, there were 50 rescue requests. He woke up to 1,000. What have I done? I've given these people hope when I don't have enough boats. Then he looked closer. The numbers weren't rising. They were falling. Volunteers had found his site. Hundreds, then thousands. Claiming pins. Heading into the storm. Saving lives. 35,000 people found their way to safety using a website built in one desperate night. The platform didn't stop with Harvey. It was there for Hurricanes Irma, Maria, and Nate. What started as one exhausted man refusing to accept chaos became permanent disaster response infrastructure. Matthew Marchetti didn't set out to revolutionize disaster response. He just had a laptop, a skill set, and a stubborn refusal to accept that drowning people couldn't be saved because the system had failed. Most people see a problem and feel helpless. Some do what they can. But a rare few ask: "What if I could fix this? Not just for the people in front of me, but for everyone?" The storm exposed the gap. Matthew built the bridge. 💙 Technology doesn't save lives. People save lives. Technology helps them find each other.
